Tickets are on sale now for the Danbury Music Centre's 49th annual performance of the the classic ballet.
"There are a couple of different reasons why the Music Centre's production is so special," said Barbara Adams Jaeger, executive producer of the Danbury Music Centre's "Nutcracker." "One of them is, of course, the live orchestra. No other productions nearby have that, you'd have to go to Hartford or New York City for that."
"But the other aspect of having the live orchestra is personal for me," she said. "It's such a learning experience for dancers to depend on live music, because they have to feel the music, it's not canned. I have two professional dancer daughters, who both came up through the DMC's "Nutcracker." It was a part of their dance training."
Her daughters have gone on to careers in the arts, and now both dance with Momix. But the Danbury Music Centre's "Nutcracker" has become a tradition for other area families as well.
"It's been a family affair for over 49 years. Families have made it a tradition to come to the performances each year," Jaeger said. "But we also have families who have made participating in the production a family activity. We have dads who participate because it's something they can do with their daughters. We've had families with up to five family members in the production."
Jaeger encouraged everyone to get their tickets early to avoid disappointment.
Performances will be Friday, Dec. 9, at 7:30 p.m.; Saturday, Dec. 10, at 2:30 and 6:30 p.m.; and Sunday, Dec. 11 at 3 p.m. All performances will be in the Danbury High School Auditorium, 43 Clapboard Ridge Road.
